JEE Main 2024 Notification: National Testing Agency (NTA) administers the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main, an engineering entrance exam in India. B.E./B.Tech.) at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It is a prerequisite for the JEE Advanced, the exam required for admission to IITs.

In recent years, the JEE Main has been administered in multiple sessions to provide candidates with greater flexibility. The first session is typically held in January, and the second session is typically held in April. This modification was made to provide students with more opportunities to take the exam and enhance their scores. Candidates have the option of participating in either or both of these sessions; the highest score is considered for admission.

Paper 1 is for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs, whereas Paper 2 is for admission to B. Arch and B. Planning programmes.

To be eligible to sit the JEE Advanced, candidates must achieve a minimum score on the JEE Main. The required score fluctuates from year to year.

The JEE Advanced is a significantly more challenging exam than the JEE Main. The examination consists of three sections: two papers on Physics and Mathematics, and one paper on Chemistry. To be eligible for admission to IITs, candidates must score well in both sessions of the examination.

If you are interested in studying engineering at an IIT, you should begin JEE Main preparation immediately. JEE Main and JEE Advanced information is available on the NTA website: https://www.nta.ac.in/.

JEE Main Exam Pattern

Here is an overview of the JEE Main examination’s format:

  • First Paper: B.E./B.Tech.
  • Mathematical, physical, and chemical disciplines
  • Type of Questions: Objective-Type Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical-Response Questions, with equal weighting for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
  • “Computer-Based Test (CBT)” is the only mode of examination.

Part I of the B. Arch. Exam 2A: Mathematics

  • Type of Questions: Objective Type – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Questions for which the answer is a numerical value.
  • “Computer-Based Test (CBT)” is the only mode of examination.

Part II: Ability Test

  • Type of Questions: Multiple-Choice Objective Questions (MCQs).

Section III: Drawing Exam

  • Type of Questions: Drawing-specific questions.
  • Exam Mode: “Pen and Paper Based” (offline), to be completed on an A4-sized drawing sheet.

Part I of B. Planning, Document 2B: Mathematics

Part III: Questions Based on Planning

  • Type of Questions: Multiple-Choice Objective Questions (MCQs)

JEE Main Exam Format

CBT is used to administer the Joint Entrance Examination Main (JEE Main) for B.E./B.Tech. Exam structure for this paper will be as follows:

Distribution of Questions by Subject, Total Number of Questions, and Marks:

Math: 20 (Section A – Multiple-Choice Questions) + 10 (Section B – Numerical Value Questions) = 30 Questions for a total of 100 points.

Physics: 20 (Section A – Multiple-Choice Questions) + 10 (Section B – Numerical Value Questions) = 30 Questions for a total of 100 points.

Chemistry: 20 (Section A – Multiple-Choice Questions) + 10 (Section B – Numerical Value Questions) = 30 Questions for a total of 100 points.

Total: 90 questions worth 300 points

JEE Main 2024 Notification

  • Each subject (Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry) is divided into two sections: Section A (Multiple Choice Questions) and Section B (Numerical Value Questions).
  • In Section B, candidates must answer any five of the ten queries provided.
  • Both Section A and Section B are subject to negative marking.
  • Section B requires candidates to input the correct integer value of the answer using the cursor and the virtual numeric keypad displayed on-screen.
  • Section B answers should be rounded to the nearest integer.

The objective of this examination pattern is to evaluate candidates’ knowledge and problem-solving skills in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry for B.E./B.Tech. programmes.

JEE Main 2024 Notification: Marking Scheme

The following is the marking scheme for Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) on the JEE Main exam:

  • Correct Response or Most Appropriate Response: Four points added
  • Incorrect Response: minus one point (-1)
  • Unanswered / To Be Reviewed: No grade (0)

Four points are awarded for each correct or most relevant response. One point is deducted as a penalty for each mistaken response. If a query is left unanswered or marked for review, no additional or subtracted points are assigned. This grading scheme is intended to encourage candidates to provide accurate responses and discourage random guesswork.

The following is the grading rubric for numerical-response questions on the JEE Main examination

Method for calculating merit

The following stages comprise the JEE Main examination’s method for determining merit:

  • Candidates’ raw ratings in the subjects of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry are converted into NTA scores.
  • Calculation of Total NTA Score: The NTA scores for each subject are added together to determine each candidate’s total NTA score.
  • Preparation of the Overall Merit List: The overall merit list is compiled by combining the NTA scores of all periods and days. This means that scores from multiple exam sessions are considered when compiling an exhaustive list of merit.

This method ensures a fair and standardised approach to determining the merit of candidates taking the JEE Main examination in various shifts and on different days. It enables a more precise evaluation of a candidate’s performance relative to all other test-takers.
