Tuesday evening, the governor and chancellor of state universities, Ramesh Bais, issued the order. It is likely that Kulkarni, a senior professor at the Institute of Chemical Technology in Matunga, will shortly assume leadership. He was one of the leading candidates for the position from the start. On May 26, he was interrogated by the governor alongside four other finalists.
Mumbai University gets a new vice-chancellor
The appointment comes as the university prepares a plan for implementing four-year degree programmes in accordance with the new National Education Policy (NEP).
The university vice-chancellor position has been vacant since September 10, when the tenure of former vice-chancellor Suhas Pednekar expired. Since the positions are co-terminus, Kulkarni’s tenure as pro-vice-chancellor also ended simultaneously. Since then, the position has been unoccupied, and an additional responsibility has been assigned to DT Shirke, vice-chancellor of Kolhapur University.
Dr Suresh Wamangir Gosavi has been named vice-chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), which had been without a full-time VC for nearly a year. Gosavi is a tenured professor in the SPPU’s Department of Physics.
Dr Sanjay Ghanshyam Bhave has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli, by the Governor. Bhave is the director of the university’s Department of Agricultural Botany.
