Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards: CSIR announces Prizes-2022 to 12 scientists

Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards:  The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) announced on Monday that 12 youthful scientists from across the nation will receive the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar awards in 2022. Among the awardees were immunologist Dipyaman Ganguli of the CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology in Kolkata, astrophysicist Kanak Saha of the Pune-based Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Kanishka Biswas of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research’s International Centre for Materials Science in Bengaluru.

The award is presented annually to scientists under 45 years of age and comes with a stipend of Rs 5 lakh and a citation.

The awards were announced amid a dispute over the government’s intentions to reduce the National Science Awards.

• Amit Singh of the Indian Institute of Science’s Department of Microbiology and Cell Biology and Arun Kumar Shukla of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur’s Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering were awarded in the category of Biological Sciences.
• Biswas and T. Govindaraju of the Bio-organic Chemistry Laboratory of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research have been selected for the prestigious Chemical Sciences prize.
• Binoy Kumar Saikia of the Coal and Energy Research Group of the CSIR North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, was awarded the prize in the Earth, Atmosphere, Ocean, and Planetary Sciences category.
  Debdeep Mukhopadhyay of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has won the prize in the discipline of Engineering Sciences.
• Anish Ghosh of Mumbai’s Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and Saket Saurabh of Chennai’s Institute of Mathematical Sciences have been awarded the Mathematical Sciences prize.
• Dr. Jeemon Panniyammakal of the Achutha Menon Centre for Health Science Studies of Sree Chitra Tirunal lnstitute for Medical Sciences and Technology and Rohit Srivastava of the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay will be awarded the prize in the field of Medical Sciences.
• Saha has won the Prize in the category of physical sciences.

The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, established in memory of the CSIR’s first Director General, is typically announced on the institution’s birthday, September 26.
