UP govt hikes scholarship amounts: The UP government has increased the amount of the Pre-Matric Scholarship scheme (classes 9 and 10) for pupils from the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) communities by Rs 500. The scheme is administered by the Department of Social Welfare. According to department officials, SC/ST pupils will now receive 3,500 rupees annually, up from 3,000 rupees previously. Eligibility for the scholarship is for children aged between 12 and 20 years, with class 10 SC/ST pupils eligible if they score a minimum of 50% marks.

Children of’safaikarmis’ (individuals who engage in manual scavenging) have been included in the new guidelines to promote school attendance. In addition, age restrictions have been imposed: applicants for pre-matric scholarships must be between 12 and 20 years old, while applicants for post-matric scholarships (above class 10) must be under 40 years old, according to an official. Management quota-admitted students are no longer eligible for the scholarship.
In addition, graduate students pursuing two courses are now eligible for the scholarship. Previously, students pursuing a bachelor’s degree like BA or BSc were eligible, but if they pursued a non-technical graduate degree like BTech, they were ineligible for the scholarship. An official stated, “We have now provided flexibility to students in accessing the scholarship, with the only requirement being a minimum of 75% attendance in school and college.”
Asim Arun, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Social Welfare, stated, “In an endeavor to assist all students from impoverished families, we have increased the scholarship amount. In accordance with our ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ policies, we have expanded the definition of eligible families.
