Air Force Reserve Birthday 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The Air Force Reserve celebrates its birthday on April 14 each year. After the ‘U.S. Air Force’ was established as a separate military branch, the ‘Air Force Reserve’ was established. Its mission is to provide “Fly, Fight, and Win” combat-ready forces. Reservists are vital to the Department of Defense’s manpower, global reach, and military flexibility strategies. This day honours those who made the courageous choice to heed the call to duty. They exemplify the values of integrity, service before self, and excellence, which should be celebrated throughout the entire year.

The background of Air Force Reserve Birthday

The Air Force Reserve has evolved from a’standby’ force for emergencies into a Major Command or MAJCOM of the “Active Duty Air Force” and is now a vital component of the nation’s defence. It consists of the ‘4th Air Force,’ the ’10th Air Force,’ and the ’22nd Air Force.’ As Chief of Staff, the President of the United States is recognised as the nation’s highest authority. It provides forces not only for aircraft missions, but also for medical, intelligence, civil engineering, security, and operations similar to those of the space force. Currently, it is responsible for approximately 20% of the “Air Force’s” duties, including traditional aircraft missions and more specialised missions such as “Weather Reconnaissance” (Hurricane Hunters), “Personnel Recovery” (Pararescuemen), and “Modular Aerial Fire Fighting.” (MAFFs). Typically, the Air Force Reserve requires approximately 72 hours to become entirely deployable and mission-ready.

Individual Mobilization Augmentees and Traditional Reservists who serve in the Unit Program are required to report for duty at least one weekend per month and two weeks per year. They do so under the direction of their parent command element, which is a group, wing, or squadron. Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) personnel serve full-time and receive full active duty pay and benefits, just like other active-duty members of any branch of the armed forces. Members of the “Air Reservation Technician Program” are also required to work full-time.

Today, there are over 71,000 reservists. All Reserve Airmen in the United States and abroad, regardless of their duty status category, are always prepared for combatant command in air, space, and cyberspace.
