The 27th of July marks José Celso Barbosa’s birthday, which is commemorated with great reverence in Puerto Rico. Dr. Barbosa’s enduring legacy as a supporter of Puerto Rican independence gained him the title “father of the statehood movement in Puerto Rico.” In addition to being the first African-Puerto Rican to earn a medical degree in the United States, he also introduced the concept of shared health insurance in the late nineteenth century. Puerto Rico commemorates the hero with a national holiday. Nationwide, offices and holdings are closed, and his teachings are passed on to newer generations.
The background of Birthday of Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa
Dr. José Celso Barbosa Alcala was born in a small Puerto Rican village. He was an intelligent, forward-thinking youth with a passion for education. As a result of his outstanding performance in elementary school, he was accepted into the prestigious Jesuit Seminary, becoming the first Black male to attend the prestigious Christian convent. Soon after concluding his education, he relocated to New York in order to investigate his options and broaden his academic exposure. After an unfortunate encounter with pneumonia, Barbosa decided to attend medical school instead of law school. In 1880, he graduated from the University of Michigan as valedictorian and became the first Puerto Rican to receive a medical degree in the United States. Upon his return to Bayamón, his birthplace, he established a clinic and provided medical services to the entire island.
Barbosa rapidly gained local notoriety, gaining the attention of numerous political leaders. In 1898, during the height of the Spanish-American War, Barbosa joined the Red Cross and travelled to conflict zones, frequently putting his life in danger. In one of these expeditions, Barbosa visited the fortifications of San Juan Bay, which earned him the favour of the Spanish government. However, the situation deteriorated when Puerto Rico surrendered to the United States at the conclusion of the conflict.
Barbosa despised vehemently the territorial authority of the United States over Puerto Rico. On July 4, 1899, he established the Partido Republicano de Puerto Rico and began recruiting supporters of statehood. He was also a diplomat for the country. Barbosa was elected to the first Puerto Rico Senate in 1917. Today, he is remembered for his devoted medical service, distinguished statesmanship, and inborn patriotism.
