Chadwick Boseman Day 2023: Celebrating the late actor Chadwick Boseman on November 29 honors premature deaths. Although Black Panther was his most famous part, Boseman also acted in “21 Bridges” and “42” and played James Brown in “Get On Up.” Boseman, known for his friendliness, modesty, and simplicity, died of colon cancer on August 28, 2020. At the time, he was 43. While honoring Chadwick Boseman on Chadwick Boseman Day, we also reflect on the exemplary individual that he was.
Chadwick Aron Boseman, the son of Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, was born in Anderson, South Carolina, on November 29, 1976. He participated on the school basketball team during his childhood and graduated from T. L. Hanna High School in 1995. The year Boseman composed his debut play was as a junior. “Crossroads” was performed at the school in remembrance of a classmate who was fatally shot.
Boseman matriculated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Directing from Howard University. During this time, Boseman devoted most of his efforts to developing his writing and directing skills. To pursue an acting career, he relocated to New York City and enrolled in the city’s Digital Film Academy before relocating to Los Angeles in 2008.
After a series of supporting roles, his breakthrough performance was as baseball superstar Jackie Robinson in the 2013 film “42.” In addition to co-starring with Kevin Costner in Draft Day, he portrayed James Brown, an NFL draft prospect, in “Get On Up” (2014).
The Marvel President took notice of Boseman portraying James Brown, and by 2016, “Captain America: Civil War” marked his debut as Black Panther. “Black Panther” debuted in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim and ranked among the year’s highest-grossing films.
Boseman became engaged to Taylor Simone Ledward in 2019, and the couple reportedly tied the knot in secrecy shortly before his passing. Boseman chose to keep the news of his colon cancer diagnosis to himself after receiving it in 2016. As his condition deteriorated, Boseman passed away on August 28, 2020, at his residence. Online condolences, tributes, and beloved memories poured in after his death, shocking and saddening the world.

He was of West African descent.
Boseman underwent a DNA test in an effort to gain further insight into his paternal heritage. The results showed that Mende and Limba were from Sierra Leone, Jola was from Guinea-Bissau, and Yoruba was from Nigeria.
He followed basketball intensely.
Boseman was a highly accomplished athlete in his earlier years, and he told Vanity Fair that basketball was his favorite sport.
He was exempt from auditioning for Black Panther.
Kevin Feige, CEO of Marvel Studios, watched Boseman in “Get On Up” and was immediately persuaded to make him the Black Panther. He was beyond certain that Boseman was the ideal candidate for the role and that an audition was unnecessary.

Boseman utilized his platform to advocate for causes that were personally significant to him. He participated in Operation 42, which donated medical equipment to hospitals fighting COVID-19, as an advocate for Families Belong Together.
His preparation for “Get On Up” was rigorous.
Boseman spent five to eight hours per day training with a choreographer for the film in which he portrayed James Brown. On set, he gave the part his all and was referred to as “Mr. Brown” by everyone.
