More people than any other population in the world speak Chinese as their native tongue. Chinese Language Day was established by UNESCO (a branch of the United Nations) in 2010 to recognise Chinese as one of the six official languages of the United Nations. We’ve relished it annually since April 20. Cangjie, who invented Chinese characters about 5,000 years ago, is also honoured on this day. According to legend, after Cangjie completed his work, the heavens rained grain upon the earth.
