Christchurch Show Day 2023: History
We are certain that you are currently contemplating the manner in which two notably dissimilar observances arrived at the same time. Everything commenced with the arrival of the Pilgrims in town. These were the initial English settlers to establish themselves in Canterbury, England; they were transported in four ships from Plymouth, England to do so. The initial group of emigrants or colonists is referred to as the Canterbury Pilgrims, whereas these vessels are more commonly called the First Four Ships.
On December 16, 1850, two of the four ships—the “Charlotte Jane” and the “Randolph”—arrived in Canterbury; this date marked the official anniversary of Canterbury Province for over a century. Each municipality in New Zealand is permitted to observe its own Provincial Anniversary Day, which is frequently commemorated as the day its initial settlers set foot on the land. Despite the abolition of the previous provincial system in 1876, the provisions outlined in this Act remain in effect at present.
Since 1862, the New Zealand Agricultural Show, formerly referred to as the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show (CAPA Show), has been held as the largest agricultural and pastoral exhibition in the country. This exceptional convergence of agriculture and entertainment takes place in Christchurch, the capital city of Canterbury.
The CAPA Show underwent a name change and was subsequently renamed “People’s Day” or “Show Day.” It was rescheduled for the second Friday following the initial Tuesday of November and provided an opportunity for exhibitors and competitors to showcase their most recent agricultural advancements. During the 1950s, the Christchurch City Council coordinated the closure of institutions and businesses with the attendance at Canterbury Anniversary Day by scheduling the two events on the same day.
