Estonia Victory Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The period of turmoil in Estonia began at the conclusion of World War I, when the nation launched its War of Independence. The conflict was fought between Soviet-Russian and Baltic-German Landeswehr armies.

The Estonian Victory Day on June 23 is a national holiday and a day of great celebration, during which all businesses and institutions are closed. But why should this day be celebrated? Well, because history is complicated and international relations were not as tranquil as they are today. In fact, numerous young men and women were sent to war to safeguard the region. Indeed, this led to the loss of numerous lives. Every year, Estonia celebrates Victory Day in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives.

The background of Estonia Victory Day

The period of turmoil in Estonia began at the conclusion of World War I, when the nation launched its War of Independence. The conflict was fought between Soviet-Russian and Baltic-German Landeswehr armies. Unfortunately, the Soviet-Russian forces had already occupied half of Estonia by the end of 1918. This was a temporary victory, however, as it wasn’t long before Finnish volunteers and British naval support arrived to defend Estonia. Together, they prevented the Soviet forces from advancing. This included a multinational force of up to 700 Baltic Germans, 85,500 Estonians, 3,700 Finns, over 5,000 Russians of the North West White Army, 9,800 Latvians, 3,000 British, 400 Swedes, 250 Danes, and 3,000 British.

Certain regions of Estonia remained in conflict until 1919, but the remainder of the country was secure. The collapse of the Von Der Goltz Landeswehr Army occurred on June 23, 1919, following the final combat. However, the Estonian Victory Day was not celebrated until 1934. Since then, the day has been commemorated and observed to commemorate the Estonian War of Independence and the struggle Estonia endured to regain and maintain its independence.

Every year, Estonia Victory Day is celebrated with an annual military parade and is followed by Midsummer Day. There are also large celebrations across the nation, and students and employees are given time off to reflect on past achievements.
