National HVAC Tech Day

With summer just beginning, it’s likely that your air conditioners will be running at full capacity; therefore, on June 22 we celebrate National HVAC Tech Day to honour the men and women who work tirelessly to keep us comfortable. Summer is brutal for many people around the world, and for those living closer to the equator, a correctly functioning air conditioner is essential. Often, we take advantage of this luxury, but it’s vital to consider the significance and value of your local HVAC Technician by recalling a time before air conditioning was a standard in every neighbourhood home. In addition, keep in mind that when a professional HVAC technician helps you select and maintain energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, they also help you reduce your carbon footprint.

The background of National HVAC Tech Day

National HVAC Tech Day was established in 2016 by ARS/Rescue Rooter, a national provider of residential services, to honour all HVAC technicians in the industry. In their honour, we have chosen to investigate the origins of the development of air conditioning.

Romans are widely regarded as the inventors of the first central heating system, which channelled hot air from a central heating boiler through pipelines installed within walls and beneath floors. Similarly, ancient Korea utilised excess heat from cooking furnaces to warm the air. Additionally, it is known that early Muslim architects installed pipelines beneath floors to keep the entire building warm.

When it came to cooling, the Ancient Egyptians suspended cold towels in the windows so that the air would contact the towels and cool the occupants. China invented room-cooling fans near water basins around the year 200 CE. During the 18th century, Benjamin Franklin made significant contributions to chemical evaporation research by discovering how to chill surfaces.

Just after the turn of the century, Albert Marsh discovered Chromel, a chromium-nickel alloy. This new alloy heralded the arrival of electrical heating elements and was 300 times stronger than comparable materials at the time. For his contributions, Albert Marsh is widely regarded as “the father of the electrical heating industry.” Willis Carrier devised the first modern air conditioning unit in 1902 by reversing the heating process.

Find out about HVAC

There are a large number of inventors who contributed to the development of the modern HVAC system; researching them is highly recommended!

Modify your filter

Apply a new filter to your air conditioner before it’s too late, as it’s likely that a replacement is required.

5 FUN HVAC FACTS

Cinema was the first industry to implement air conditioning in all of its public theatres.

Herbert Hoover was the first president to have air conditioning in the Oval Office, which is ironic given that he invented vacuum cleaners that drew rather than blew air.

In 1953, over a million air conditioners were sold in the United States.

Today, the average family spends $2,000 per year on energy expenses, with half of that spent on cooling and heating the home.

Studies have demonstrated that our reliance on air conditioning has diminished our ability to withstand extreme temperatures.
