Faux Fur Friday’s History

People probably became interested in fur because they needed to stay warm in the past, before power was even thought of. Animal skins, or fur, were only worn by the very rich and powerful over time. These people were called rulers, nobles, and so on. In ancient Egypt, kings and high priests wore coats made of leopard skins. Later, English kings made rules that said only the noble elite could wear expensive furs like fox and ermine. Because of these problems, people from all walks of life wanted fur more, and it became a sign of social status. The fact that many famous people wore fur coats made fur the ultimate sign of wealth and power.

After that came fake fur. In the 1800s, it was first suggested that fake fur only be used on children. It was also thought that fake fur would never be able to replace real fur. Fur that looks like real fur started to show up slowly in the early 1900s. At first, this was made from the wool of lambs that were still unborn or had just been born. Soon after, it was mixed with synthetic fibers. Around the middle of the 1900s, fake fur became very popular. By the 1950s, these clothes were getting cheaper and more popular as well.

At that time, there were lots of stories in the news about companies competing to make the most lifelike and expensive fake fur. It was their idea to get patents on fake bodies and sell them under names like Cloud No. 9, Borgana, Glenara, and Dynasty. The New York Times even said that sales of fake fur went through the roof, from a few million dollars in 1954 to about $80,000,000 in 1957.

In the 1970s, there was a movement against fur, which gave the fake fur business a big boost. It reached a new high when famous supermodels Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford were chosen to be in a PETA ad campaign against the sale of real fur.

Real fur was the preferred material for fashion designers, but now companies like Vogue Paris and Gucci are supporting fake fur. Several brands have also joined the fake fur trend, and they sell it to people of all price ranges.

In the past few years, many businesses have stopped using real fur, some countries have banned the production of fur, and many designers have started to look into large-scale production of fake fur.
