Gold Spouses Day is annually observed on April 5. We honour and mourn with the families of fallen or injured service members. This day, formerly known as Gold Star Wives Day, is now inclusive of all family members — male or female — who have lost loved ones due to military service. This day is a reminder to the afflicted families that we remember their sacrifice and mourn their loss. There are memorial services and “remember the fallen” road races held in their honour.
The background of Gold Star Spouses Day
Every day, thousands of men and women devote their lives to serving the nation. This also indicates that there are thousands of families with members in the military. Imagine saying farewell to a loved one with no assurance that you will see them again. This is what military families must endure whenever a family member is summoned to active duty. Our fearless service heroes leave behind wives, husbands, siblings, sisters, sons, and daughters.
During World War I, families began flying service flags with blue stars to signify each member of their family serving in the armed forces. If the family member or family members in question perished, the stars would be substituted with gold stars as a public display of the cost the family paid for freedom. Eleanor Roosevelt was one of the founding members of the Golden Star Wives Association in 1945, when it was established. A short time later, the government authorised the Golden Star Lapel Button, which is presented to the spouses and families of those who have lost a service member in the line of duty.
In 1929, a law was enacted that provided compensation for mothers and wives of those killed in combat, and by 1936, the last Sunday in September was designated as National Gold Star Mother’s Day. President Barack Obama eventually changed the name to Gold Star Mothers and Families Day. The first Gold Star Wives’ Day was observed in 2010, and the name was ultimately changed to Gold Star Spouse Day to be more inclusive.

Five FACTS OF MILITARY LIFE
Military families relocate approximately every two to three years, which is approximately ten times more frequently than conventional families.
When a male military service member is deployed for more than a year, 36.6% of female spouses are diagnosed with mental health conditions, according to statistics.
According to experts in bereavement, an average of ten individuals are affected by a military death on active duty.
About 95% of military spouses are females under the age of 35, while only 5% are males.
As they must relocate every year, it can be difficult for military spouses to establish a long-term career.
