Once the characters removed their eyes from the extraterrestrial monsters, they were unable to recall having seen them. To remind themselves that they had encountered creatures, the characters began marking their skin with tally marks.
To commemorate this day, all Whovians mark their epidermis or other body parts with tally marks. As a joke among themselves, the fans act normally and appear not to know why the tally marks are present.
