International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Since blogging became a part of online culture, a large number of individuals have chosen to share information on topics varying from educational to entertaining content.

Every year on April 23, the world commemorates International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day. The day was declared by author Jo Walton in response to comments made by Howard Hendrix, who stated that he was “opposed to the increasing presence in our organisation of webscabs, who post their creations on the internet for free.” According to Walton, the purpose of the day is to encourage authors to publish free, high-quality work online. The day honours all writers and gives them permission to share their work with the public, not only to entertain or educate them, but also to build the profession and keep it on exhibit so it can be properly appreciated.

The background of International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day.

Since blogging became a part of online culture, a large number of individuals have chosen to share information on topics varying from educational to entertaining content. Professional writers have and continue to use this medium to create an audience for themselves. It’s not surprising that more people, including professional writers, are catering to the requirements of the vast online audience that reads for entertainment.

Pixel-Stained International Technopeasant Day was founded in response to derogatory remarks made by Howard V. Hendrix, who believed that professional authors should never give away their work for free. He referred to those who did so as “webscabs” and defined them as “pixel-stained technopeasant wretches.” The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (S.F.W.A.) society, of which Hendrix was a member and to whom his remarks were directed, was stirred by his remarks.

Jo Walton, a member of the society, came up with an excellent response: encouraging as many “webscabs” as possible to continue doing what they enjoy, which was posting free professional-quality writing online. On April 23, 2007, it resulted in the establishment of International Pixel-Stained Technopeasant Day. The objectives were unambiguous. Poems, short stories, and novels, both previously published and unpublished, could be submitted. Their objective was to make a great deal of professional writing available online, which was diametrically opposed to what Hendrix desired. The celebration began in 2007 and has continued uninterrupted ever since. Since its inception, it has been celebrated annually, and writers have been publishing free, professional-quality work.
