International Colour Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

International Color Day is observed on March 21, and we will demonstrate how you can participate. Do you realize that it has been fourteen years since the Portuguese Color Association first proposed International Color Day? International Color Day was established in honor of color. The date of March 21 was chosen because it is the day of the equinox, when day and night are nearly equal in duration because the sun’s rays are perpendicular to the equator. This day is celebrated with a variety of activities, including exhibitions, scientific shows, and interactive programs for children.

The background of International Colour Day

Color has always intrigued humans since the dawn of time. Aristotle believed that colors originated in paradise. He believed that black and white were the original hues. In the 1660s, however, when Isaac Newton experimented with light and its various spectrums, color became a subject of study. After two thousand years, Aristotle’s postulates were supplanted by Newton’s. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a German novelist, playwright, and scientist, argued that color perception varied from person to person. His famous quote, “Colors are light’s sufferings and joys,” is well-known. Jacob Christoph Le Blon identified the difference between primary and secondary hues.

In 2008, Maria Joao Durao, the president of the Portuguese Color Association, proposed to the Association Internationale de la Couleur (A.I.C.) that a day be designated to recognize the significance of color. In 2009, the members approved the proposal. The date of March 21 was chosen because it is the day of the equinox. To commemorate, competitions, science fairs, art fairs, etc. are conducted. In 2012, a contest was conducted in Taipei, Taiwan, to determine the International Color Day logo. Hosana Yau of Hong Kong won the competition with his eye-shaped diagram of two circles. Half of the circle was rainbow-colored, while the other half was black. They stood for illumination and darkness.
