International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict 2023

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict 2023: November 6 is annually observed as International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. War invariably causes suffering for humanity. There are fatalities and injuries. Municipalities are completely incinerated. What about the environment, however? Wells, rivers, and oceans are all polluted. Deforestation occurs, and crops are incinerated. Poisoned soils result. We are both influenced by and influence the natural environment, which includes weather, climate, and natural resources, as well as other living species.

Hence, in order to safeguard the environment as a guarantor of peace and security and to prevent its exploitation in military conflicts, this day was established. Despite armed aggression, we are all exhorted to speak out and reaffirm our commitment to protecting our endangered planet.

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict 2023: History

On our planet, war and armed conflict are detrimental to all life forms, including humans. Consider recent history: deplorable conflicts fought for decades, including those in Afghanistan, Colombia, and Iraq, have resulted in the catastrophic depletion of natural resources. A remarkable 95% deforestation rate has been observed in certain regions of Afghanistan alone. The state of affairs proved disastrous for forest conservation and wildlife, as these ecosystems became vulnerable to unauthorized harvesting, unregulated mining, and widespread poaching.

The elephant population in the Central African Republic has been eradicated, whereas the Seversky Donets River in Ukraine has experienced additional degradation due to pollution. Water infrastructure damage has occurred in Yemen and Gaza, presenting environmental and public health hazards.

Such calamitous consequences cannot be disregarded. In fact, the United Nations’ proclamation of this international day in 2001 served as an impetus for the international community to take action.
