International Men’s Day 2023: Commemorated on November 19, International Men’s Day emphasizes the health of men, the improvement of gender relations, the promotion of positive masculine expressions, and the recognition of male role models.
International Men’s Day 2023: History
In 1968, John P. Harris, an American journalist, penned an editorial highlighting an imbalance in the Soviet system: while it advocated for a male-only International Women’s Day, it neglected to provide a corresponding celebration for female laborers. Harris stated that while he concurred that a day should be set aside to honor women, that doing so constituted a flaw in the communist system.
During the early 1990s, organizations from the United States, Australia, and Malta were extended invitations by Thomas Oaster, the director of the Missouri Center for Men’s Studies, to participate in modest International Men’s Day events in February. Although Oaster hosted these events effectively for two years, his 1995 attempt attracted a lackluster attendance. He discontinued his intentions to proceed with the function out of discouragement. After Australia ascended to the occasion, Malta was the only nation to persist in its festivities.
The day was resurrected in Trinidad and Tobago in 1999 by Jerome Teelucksingh, an academic from the University of the West Indies. He came to the realization that while a day was assigned to honor fathers, there was no equivalent day to commemorate young boys and adolescents who were not married. Teelucksingh, whose father had served as an exemplary male figure for him, recognized the significance of positive male role models. In honor of this, he selected November 19 to observe International Men’s Day—both his father’s birthday and the day a local soccer team represented his country in its pursuit of qualifying for the World Cup.
International Men’s Day has functioned as a platform to raise awareness about the favorable facets of male identity ever since the resurgence of Teelucksingh. Its underlying principle is that men react more positively to positive role models than to detrimental gender stereotypes. In lieu of competing with International Women’s Day, this day emphasizes positive masculinity and the significance of men’s mental and physical health.
