International Rescue Cat Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Cats

Domestic cats have quick reflexes, a sturdy body, and sharp teeth. Cats were first domesticated in Greece around 1200 BCE, after which they were introduced to Southern Europe.

International Rescue Cat Day is celebrated annually on March 2. There are many stray cats on the streets who are just waiting for a day like today, when people will come to adopt them and bring them into their homes. To adopt a cat, all you have to do is visit a pet adoption agency, which will then proceed with the adoption if everything checks out. The majority of domesticated cats are valued by humans as companions, particularly by people who work from home and apartment dwellers.

The background of International Rescue Cat Day

Domestic cats have quick reflexes, a sturdy body, and sharp teeth. Cats were first domesticated in Greece around 1200 BCE, after which they were introduced to Southern Europe. By the fifth century, they were commonplace around Etruscan settlements.

Henry Bergh founded the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (A.S.P.C.A.) in 1867, and it was the first humane organisation to advocate that all animals are entitled to respectful and kind treatment and must be legally protected. The A.S.P.C.A. plays a crucial role in animal adoption and rescue. Animal rescues play an important role in the community by reuniting lost pets with their owners, providing shelter for homeless animals, and rehoming animals. They contribute to enhancing the health and welfare of animals in the community.

Each year, over 6,000,000 domestic animals enter U.S. animal shelters, of which over 3,000,000 are cats. Approximately 530,000 cats are euthanized annually in animal shelters, a decrease from 2011 when approximately 1,500,000 cats were euthanized. This decline is a result of an increase in the number of cats adopted and the number of stray cats reunited with their owners. Each year, approximately 2,100,000 cats are adopted.
