International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament 2023: Date, History, Facts about Nukes

In the early 1980s, a group of pro-pacifist feminists from across Europe joined the already-loud calls for the disarmament of the world's nuclear stockpiles and military forces.

The 24th of May is International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament. It is a day to commemorate women’s efforts to rid the world of nuclear weapons. We celebrate diplomacy, human decency, and a violence-free, tranquil future.

For generations, women’s only role in armed conflict consisted of being left behind to grieve while their sons, husbands, and siblings fought. This Day signifies a significant shift in the role of women in the conflict. They are currently anxious to speak out and be heard. This day is also intended to raise awareness of the terror posed by nuclear weapons.

The background of International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament

In the early 1980s, a group of pro-pacifist feminists from across Europe joined the already-loud calls for the disarmament of the world’s nuclear stockpiles and military forces. In 1985, there were approximately 62,000 active nuclear warheads around the world. The International Day of Women for Peace and Disarmament was instituted on May 24.

Since the 1980s, May 24 has served as a rallying cry for pacifist and human rights organisations around the world to urge governments to cease the production and distribution of armaments, whether to their own militaries or private citizens within their own countries.

The movement has developed and changed over the years, but its core purpose remains the same: to stand up and demand an end to all forms of violence. As governments appear to prioritise weaponry and advancements in military technology over human safety. Concerning the need to protect our planet from nuclear weapons, there are still many ongoing debates. Today, as in the 1980s, it is necessary to observe this holiday.
