On May 8, we commemorate Jamestown Day. Jamestown was the first English permanent colony in North America. This year is the 415th anniversary of the establishment’s foundation. Currently, it comprises two cultural heritage properties. Jamestown Island’s archaeological location is Historic Jamestown. Jamestown Settlement is a living history museum that reconstructs the original Powhatan Native American settlement of James Fort. It contains replicas of the ships used by the original settlers: the “Susan Constant,” “Godspeed,” and “Discovery.” In addition, Jamestown Settlement also celebrates Indigenous Arts Day on this day. It is possible to purchase music, dance, and traditional and contemporary Native American artwork.

The background of Jamestown Day

In 1606, English colonists set sail for the New World to establish a colony. Susan Constant, Discovery, and Godspeed were the ships that made up the fleet. No women were present on the first voyages. On April 26, 1607, they landed at a location they named Cape Henry. The soldiers engaged in a skirmish with local natives. Captain E.M. Wingfield selected uninhabited land on a large promontory as the site for a fortified settlement on May 17. Due to its proximity to the James River, this community was named Jamestown.

It was extremely difficult there. Many of the earliest settlers were aristocrats who were unaccustomed to manual labour or farming, and they found the going to be challenging. The site was infested with insects that caused malaria. On the peninsula, there was very little wildlife because they were all driven to extinction. The water could not be consumed. The soil was insufficient for agriculture, and the local natives continually attacked the farmers. It was the leadership of Captain John Smith that kept them running. In December 1607, Smith’s men were slain by the Powhatan tribe while gathering food, but he escaped by tying their guide to himself and using himself as a shield. Due to the fact that he spoke of his relationship with “Pocahontas” 17 years after the alleged incidents, his accounts were disputed. She brought food and aid to the settlement and secured the release of the Indians who had been captured. Smith’s leadership resulted in the dispatch of artisans and labourers from various nations to the new colony.

In 1609, Smith was severely injured in an explosion and returned to England. Without him, a severe winter ensued. The colony entered a period known as the Starving Time. When assistance eventually arrived, only 60 of the original 500 Jamestown settlers remained. Jamestown appeared doomed, but in 1814, when John Rolfe began exporting new tobacco seedlings he had brought from Bermuda, everything changed dramatically. In London, it was a triumph, and demand grew exponentially. Rolfe, who was now affluent, wed Pocahontas. She was a Christian convert who had been kidnapped by colonists. She is now known as Rebecca. This resulted in a number of years of calm between the English and the Powhatan. By 1619, tobacco was widespread throughout Europe, and Jamestown was thriving. In that same year, the first representative assembly in America, the General Assembly, convened in the Jamestown Church “to establish one equal and uniform government over all Virginia” that would provide “just laws for the happy guiding and governing of the people there inhabiting.”

The Virginia Company was granted a charter by King James I of England to settle the Virginia Colony, send bullion back to England, and seek an alternate route to Asia.

They arrived in August 1619 and became indentured servants, as did many impoverished Englishmen who exchanged years of labour for passage to the New World.

This was a request by the Virginia Company to conceal the decline in the colony’s population.

Women did not want to join the males in Jamestown because they had heard terrible things about the colony’s condition, so numerous incentives were advertised to entice them.

This was a result of the high mortality rate caused by disease, poor administration, and Native American assaults.
