On May 6, we celebrate Joseph Brackett Day. It is a day to commemorate the extraordinary talent of the song’s songwriter and composer. He is also a well-known author and musician. Later, he became an elder of The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearance, or Shakers. The Tune Lovers Society is an online organisation dedicated to preserving and protecting traditional American music. They sponsored a Joseph Brackett birthday celebration on May 6, which became Joseph Brackett Day. This year, we are also participating in the Joseph Brackett Day celebrations.
The Background of Joseph Brackett Day
Joseph Brackett Jr. was born in Cumberland, Maine in the year 1797. He joined the Shakers when he was 10 years old. The community was short-lived, but a new community centred on Brackett’s property was established. In 1819, the party relocated to Poland Hill. In the years that followed, he laboured for the community and eventually became its leader. In between, on July 27, 1838, he lost his father.
In 1848, Brackett published ‘Simple Gifts’. The song was initially not particularly popular. It was a short tune about modesty and simplicity. The Shakers utilised a small amount of rhythm for dancing during their devotional activities. Brackett never anticipated that his song would become so ubiquitous. However, it is currently one of the most renowned songs. It is performed everywhere, such as in churches, on television, at weddings, funerals, etc. Throughout the years, various artists have released numerous renditions of the song. However, the tune gained popularity after Aaron Copland incorporated it into one of his ballet scores.
As an elder of The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Coming, Brackett was never married. Shakers are fundamentally Christians with a few modifications to their beliefs. They believe that the end of the world and the return of Christ will occur shortly.
