The background of Jura Independence Day

For those unfamiliar with Jura, the Jura Mountains are a mountain range extending 225 miles in an arc from the Rhône River to the Rhine on both sides of the Franco-Swiss border. It shares territory with both France and Switzerland. Jura contains a plethora of towns. Chambery, Geneva, Neuchatel, Biel, Solothurn, Arau, Baden, Bourg-en-Bresse, Lons-le-Saunier, Besancon, Montbeliard, and Porrentruy are among its major cities.

The Canton of Jura is the newest of Switzerland’s 26 cantons, located in the country’s northwest. In the year 999, the monarch of Burgundy gave the bishop of Basel a large portion of the land that now comprises the canton of Jura. For over 800 years, this territory was a sovereign state within the Holy Roman Empire. All of this altered following the Vienna Congress of 1815, when the Jura region became a canton of Bern. However, the fact that Jura was predominantly Catholic and French-speaking while Bern was predominantly Protestant and German-speaking lead to numerous tense situations throughout history.

Following World War II, a dissident movement advocated for Jura’s separation from the canton of Bern. In 1978, the split became official after the Swiss people voted in favour, and Jura became a complete member of the Swiss Confederation on June 23, 1979. Today, Jura is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the globe. People from all over the globe travel to Jura both in the summer and, increasingly, in the winter to enjoy the excellent skiing trails.
