License Plates Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

It's incredible to consider that the standards of today were discoveries of the past. Not until the 20th century was the idea of distinguishing vehicles based on number plates conceived.

Licence Plates Day is observed on April 25 to commemorate the issuance of the first licence plate in the United States in 1901. Prior to this, no vehicle bore any official markings or identification. The lack of recognition was detrimental to vehicle owners, as horses and carriages had superior rights and could be denied access to roads. With the passage of the law, New York became the first state to issue licence plates for vehicles, and the rest of the West Coast states quickly followed suit. There are currently over 250 million registered vehicles in the United States, and each one has a unique licence plate.

The background of License Plates Day

It’s incredible to consider that the standards of today were discoveries of the past. Not until the 20th century was the idea of distinguishing vehicles based on number plates conceived. In 1901, New York Governor Benjamin Odell Jr. signed into law a bill requiring vehicle proprietors to register their vehicles with the state. Originally, the law included guidelines for the design of the licence plate, but they were eliminated following the automobile boom of the 1950s. Individuals were permitted to design their own licence plates so long as the characters were three inches tall. George F. Chamberlain was the first individual to receive a licence plate for his vehicle on May 2, 1901. A week after the law’s April 25 implementation, 17 individuals had already applied for licences. In one year, the number of number plates in the United States increased to 1,566.

Although labelling vehicles individually at the time was costly and time-consuming for both authorities and citizens, it was also a relief. Without proper marking or acknowledgment, state-specific regulations tormented vehicle owners. In the early 1890s, the Netherlands and France were ahead of the United States in establishing a national database for licence plates.

Plate historian Keith Marvin observes that the plate fashion parade was once a spectacle, with owners adorning their plates with metal, leather and even wood. As the vehicle’s number plate number increased, the owner’s initials were replaced by numerals. The state subsequently assumed responsibility for the issuance, design, and database of licence plates. On April 25, individuals take their vehicles for a stroll and proudly exhibit their personalised licence plates. Across the nation, exhibitions of licence plates are held, and enthusiasts gather to discuss the fascinating history of licence plates.
