Memory Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Memory

Memory Day is observed annually on March 21. This day honors the human memory and all it can accomplish. It is also a day to bring attention to the thousands of people affected by memory loss due to diseases and conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Moreover, your memory may not be as strong as you believe. Keeping multiple reminders and to-do lists on your phone and in notebooks, scribbling on your hand with a permanent marker, and entering a room with the sensation that you forgot something are all things that we all do. Are they not?

The background of Memory Day

Memory and the intelligence to use it have been two of the most important aspects of human evolution and success. It illustrates why maladies and conditions that result in memory loss and degeneration are so detrimental to humans. What you may not be aware of, however, is the lesser but no less terrifying degree of memory loss that nearly every person in the modern world is experiencing. As technology has expanded to encompass every aspect of our existence, we have fallen victim to a phenomenon known as digital amnesia. Our reliance on populating digital calendars, setting numerous alarms and reminders on our smartphones, and automating our devices to remember for us has caused us to forget how to remember.

In May of 2015, Kaspersky conducted research on how the internet and its associated devices were altering people’s lifestyles. As a result of relying on their phones to remember minor details and personal information, their study found that users experienced a significant decline in their ability to recall such details. Some theorized that this memory loss resulted from neurons not being stimulated and becoming stagnant, whereas others argued that their memory was freed up for the truly essential things on which they desired to concentrate.

Regardless, the holiday is a reminder to keep your neurons active! Memory Day is a good time to remind ourselves of the importance of maintaining a healthy state of mind and memory and to advocate for it. Whether you want to remember not to sweat the small stuff, such as birthdays and small reminders, or you want to leave room for the adventure you will spend the day beginning, Memory Day is a good time to do so.
