Following his unsuccessful attempt to elude capture, Mudd was transferred to the prison's carpenter shop.

Mudd Day 2023: Mudd Day is celebrated on December 20 of each year. To celebrate the birthday of Dr. Samuel Mudd. On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shot and killed President Abraham Lincoln; however, Booth suffered injuries in the course of his escape. Then, early on April 15, he traveled to Mudd’s home with conspirator David Herold to get his fractured leg operated on before going into Virginia.

It seems likely that Mudd was aware of the murder at some point that day, but he waited until the next day to inform the police about Booth’s visit. This fact, together with the multiple times he revised his story while being questioned, seemed to link him to the crime. After a military commission found Mudd guilty of aiding and abetting murder, she received a life sentence. A single vote prevented him from receiving the death penalty.

The Background of Muddy Day

Samuel Alexander Mudd Sr., an American surgeon who lived from December 20, 1833, to January 10, 1875, was put in prison for his involvement with William Booth in the Lincoln assassination.

Mudd practiced medicine and planted tobacco in southern Maryland. The Civil War had a severe negative impact on his business, especially after Maryland outlawed slavery in 1864. It was in that year that he first met Booth, who was planning to kidnap Lincoln, and Mudd was often seen with three of the conspirators. His place, if any, in the story is still unknown, though.

It is well known that Mudd took Booth under his wing when Lincoln was killed. He was therefore charged with being a conspirator in the assassination. On April 14, 1865, Booth killed Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. While leaping from the president’s box seat to the stage, Booth shattered his fibula. After meeting Herold, he and Herold took a horseback ride to Mudd’s house, which was roughly five miles north of Bryantown, Maryland.

After taking Booth upstairs, Mudd splinted his leg. Then he gave Herold and Booth permission to spend the night. Mudd got a pair of crutches from a carpenter nearby the next morning so Booth could use them while he healed from his injury. In the late afternoon, after staying in Mudd’s home for at least twelve hours, Booth took off his mustache and departed. A couple of weeks afterward, Booth and Herold were found in a tobacco shack in Virginia by Union cavalry. Herold gave up, but Booth refused. A shack that had been set on fire was where Booth was hiding. After being forced to come out, he was immediately shot to death. There has been debate on Mudd’s actions and his role in the crime for many years.
