National Africa Civility Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Africa

National Africa Civility Day is an annual human rights holiday observed on September 15. Typically, award ceremonies are held on this day to honour the efforts of humanitarians from all over the globe. Since its inception, National Africa Civility Day has provided the ideal setting for humanitarian organisations and other global authorities to convene and debate strategies for intervening in and mitigating the worsening crisis in various global societies. Due to the narrow line that exists between efforts to promote peace and efforts to improve humanitarian conditions on the African continent, discussions surrounding civility have become increasingly significant.

The background of National Africa Civility Day

It is wonderful that we have a day to recognise the peacemaking and reconciliation efforts of all those involved in humanitarian efforts. Humanitarian organisations have been known to have access to areas that others cannot reach in order to provide aid to those in need, even in the midst of a conflict. Therefore, we cannot properly observe this day without mentioning Henri Dunant, a Swiss businessman and social activist who is best known as the founder of formalised humanitarian assistance.

After witnessing how wounded soldiers were left to perish following the Battle of Solferino in June 1859, Dunant altered his plans and initiated a relief effort. Dunant provided food, drink, and medical supplies to injured men from all parties, including the Austrian, Italian, and French armies. Dunant’s memoir, which solemnly recounts his experiences at the Battles of Solferino, is an essential foundational work for modern humanitarianism. His efforts to establish a permanent rescue organisation and International Humanitarian Law began shortly after the 1862 publication of Dunant’s seminal work.

In 1863, the Geneva Society of Public Welfare established the International Committee for Aid to Wounded in Situations of War to aid wounded combatants in war. The Geneva Conventions signed an agreement in 1864 to establish standards for future conflicts. The objective was to care for and protect the wounded and ill during combat. In the decades that followed, the expanding significance of the treaty was the impetus for large-scale government-led relief efforts in the aftermath of natural disasters around the world. Since almost a century ago, the International Committee of the Red Cross has been a protector of humanitarian law and one of the world’s largest donors.
