National Dog Fighting Awareness Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Dog Fighting

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day has been observed annually since 2014 on April 8. It is not surprising that dogfighting is prohibited nationwide. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals believes there are still numerous dog fighting rings, so they established this day as part of April’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month to raise awareness and encourage individuals to take action against dog fighting. For these competitions, dogs are trained to maim or murder their opponent, and it is all too common for the losers to be abandoned without medical care.

The background of National Dog Fighting Awareness Day

During the Roman invasion of Britain in 43 A.D., both parties brought dogs to the battlefield to assist in combat. While the Romans won the conflict, British dogs proved to be better trained; consequently, impressed, the Romans began to import British fighting dogs for use in battle and entertainment. They would transport them to the Colosseum, where they would fight in groups against other animals, and then export them to other European nations.

By the 12th century, the English aristocracy had their subjects combat bulls and bears in chains. Early in the 19th century, people began discussing the scarcity of bulls and bears, their high prices, and even animal cruelty, resulting in the 1835 prohibition by the British Parliament. But this only prompted everyone to engage in dog-on-dog combat. Humans began interbreeding canines in order to produce stronger breeds.

Shortly prior to the beginning of the American Civil War, fighting dogs were imported into the United States, and subsequently the rest of the globe. In the 1860s, however, the majority of U.S. states outlawed bloodsport due to mounting concerns about animal cruelty. The American SPCA was established on April 10, 1966. Every state outlawed dogfighting in 1976, but enforcement was lax until a study revealed a link between the activity and other offences.

The Animal combat Prohibition Act went into effect in May 2007, and each offence of interstate or international transport of animals for combat purposes is punishable by up to three years in prison. In December 2010, the A.S.P.C.A. established a Blood Sports unit dedicated solely to investigating animal combat and partnered with the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services of the U.S. Department of Justice. In 2017 alone, over 300 canines were rescued from 13 dogfighting operations in 11 states.
