A consideration for Winston Churchill Day:
“Success is not final and failure is not fatal: what matters is the courage to continue.”
On April 9, 1963, President Kennedy signed into law a bill that made Churchill, the combatant, author, and tireless British prime minister, an honorary citizen of the United States. It was neither his birthday nor his day of death (he was still very much alive), but the day held military significance for all of us. Sir Winston Churchill is credited with uniting the British people during the darkest days of World War II, for which he was knighted by the Queen.
To commemorate Winston Churchill Day on April 9, we have compiled a list of insightful facts and quotations to help you “keep calm and carry on.”
The background of National Winston Churchill Day
Much can be said about Winston Churchill, the half-American, all-grit English treasure. Churchill was the grandson of a duke and the son of a wealthy American mother, so he was born into grandeur. However, his early years were problematic, as he struggled academically and with his studies. His instructor described him as “unreliable and careless.” Nonetheless, as he aged, Churchill excelled in history and began publishing poetry in school magazines. Churchill began preparing for a military career and matriculated from the Royal Military Academy in 1894 in response to his father’s repeated urgings. Churchill fought in Cuba, India, Sudan, and South Africa from 1895 to 1900, was mentioned in dispatches and recommended for a decoration, earned four campaign medals and the Spanish Order of Military Merit, authored five books, established himself as a popular war correspondent and lecturer, and was elected to Parliament, all before his twenty-sixth birthday. As Britain’s prime minister during the second World War, he would later lead the country to victory. As a renowned politician, army officer, and author, it is difficult to say to whom he was the most influential. With a Nobel Prize in Literature, numerous medals of distinction, and an undeniable impact on the world we live in today, we choose this day to honour a man who exemplified greatness.
