The majority of royal family members’ anniversaries are celebrated in Norway with an official holiday. These are ordinary workdays and not public holidays. There are, however, events commemorating the milestone anniversaries of family members. To familiarise you with the Queen, here are some facts about her existence.
The background of Queen Sonja’s day
Queen Sonja was born to commoners in Oslo on July 4, 1937. She studied dressmaking and tailoring and earned degrees in fashion and the social sciences; this may explain her impeccable taste! Additionally, she earned a diploma from a Swiss finishing school. In 1959, she met Crown Prince Harald at a party, and they began dating immediately.
Due to the contentious nature of their relationship, they hid it from the public. Prior to Harald, a royal, particularly the future King, was not permitted to court commoners. Sonja and the then-Crown Prince Harald had been courting for nine years prior to their 1968 wedding. Harald had warned his father, King Olav V, that he would remain unmarried if he did not grant his permission for him to marry Sonja. Eventually, King Olav V approved the marriage, and Sonja was honoured at her 1968 nuptials.
In 1991, in Oslo, Harald and Sonja were crowned King and Queen of Norway. The Queen has been an active humanitarian for many years, particularly in support of organisations for children and the Red Cross. She hosts visiting dignitaries and accompanies the King on royal excursions. Her diverse passions include painting, music, and trekking in Norway. Alongside the King, she is a potter and painter. Queen Sonja enjoys enormous popularity in her native country. Sonja is currently one of the most popular girl’s names, with many people giving it to their daughters. All government departments and state agencies, as well as a large number of private residences, celebrate the Queen’s birthday because Norwegians take national pride seriously.
