The date of Saint Teresa Canonization Day is September 5. Mother Teresa is revered as a saint and is one of the most influential national figures in Albania. On this day, religious ceremonies are conducted in her honour throughout Albania. At St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, Pope Francis canonised her 19 years to the day after her death in 1997. She was the first individual to be canonised who was born in the Ottoman Balkans. She was on a mission for peace and devoted her life to assisting the poor.
The background of Saint Teresa Canonisation Day in Albania
Agnes Gonxhe Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje, Ottoman Empire, on August 26, 1910. Her Albanian ancestry provided her with more opportunities than most other women. Agnes was inspired by missionary stories as a child, but it wasn’t until she was 18 that she decided to leave her parents in Ireland and enter a convent to study English. After moving to India in 1929 and becoming a nun in 1931, she adopted the name Teresa after the patron saint of missionaries, Thérèse de Lisieux.
In 1950, Mother Teresa established the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious order. All members are required to accept vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, as well as a fourth vow of “wholehearted free service” to the poor. Numerous honours, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, were bestowed upon Mother Teresa in recognition of her philanthropic endeavours. She was widely recognised as “Teresa of Calcutta.” Mother Teresa died at the age of 87 on September 5, 1997. In recognition of her service to the poor of all religions, the Indian government granted her a state funeral.
On October 19, 2003, Pope John Paul II beatified Mother Teresa at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. In September 2016, Pope Francis canonised Mother Teresa of Calcutta. The Albanian-born nun and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Mother Teresa, stated that she was Albanian by blood, Indian by citizenship, and Catholic by devotion. This Albanian national holiday honours her beatification ceremony.
