School Bus Drivers’ Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Buses

Annually, School Bus Drivers’ Day is celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of April. This year, the date is April 25. California is where School Bus Drivers’ Day originated. After a period of unofficial observance, the California legislature declared the day an official holiday. In 2009, the day was established to honour school bus drivers in California for their enduring and exceptional contributions to the education of students. The holiday appears to have spread after being instituted in one state for casual observance.

The background of School Bus Drivers’ Day

Children were conveyed to and from school by horse-drawn carriages at the turn of the 20th century. A.L. Luce, the proprietor of a Ford dealership, constructed a school bus body for a 1927 Ford Model T. Moreover, he is a reaction to modern school vehicles. Open-sided steel-paneled buses were first manufactured in 1927. In the 1930s, the use of front entrance doors increased. However, the rear door remained and was used in case of an emergency. Children from low-income families living in rural areas throughout the world have benefited tremendously from school buses.

In 1939, 44 requirements for school buses were approved during a meeting. One was that vehicles were customarily painted yellow. The colour was selected because black letters could be read on it and because it was believed to be the most visible at dawn and twilight. Despite the fact that school buses have frequently undergone modifications and enhancements, the need for bus drivers has remained constant.

In 2009, the California State Assembly proclaimed School Bus Drivers Day. It is a well-deserved tribute to the men and women who dedicate their lives to ensuring that children attend school each and every day while remaining patient, helpful, and optimistic throughout.
