South African Liberation Day is annually observed on March 23. The day is significant for the region because it represents a turning point in South African history. This day commemorates the Cuito Cuanavale battle, which occurred in 1988 in the Angolan province of Cuando Cubango between the Angolan Army, aided by Cuban forces, and apartheid-era South African troops.

The conflict in the southwest region of Angola led to the withdrawal of South African, A.N.C., and Cuban forces, as well as the independence of Namibia. In numerous southern African nations, the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale is commemorated.

The background of South African Liberation Day

While accounts of the battle and the larger conflict vary, the colonizers were ultimately defeated, resulting in the liberation of neighboring Namibia and the eventual end of apartheid in South Africa.

South Africa controlled former German Southwest Africa and Namibia at the time and was attempting to suppress rebellions there. Cuba and the Soviet Union both supported communist armies in Angola and Namibia. The United States, South Africa, and the rest of the international community supported the opposing side.

It was not merely an arbitrary South African invasion of Angola, but a crucial battle in the larger Cold War. When Namibian insurgents sought refuge in Angola and South Africa supported pro-Western revolutionaries in Angola, conflict was inevitable.

In southern Angola, South African soldiers fought Cuban and Angolan forces from November 1987 to March 1988, but were decisively defeated on March 23, 1988. The victory at Cuito Cuanavale altered the landscape of southern Africa and was the last significant liberation battle in the region. It was swiftly followed by successful negotiations for Namibia’s independence in 1990 and the end of South Africa’s apartheid administration in 1994, paving the way for regional integration and development.

This is a relatively new holiday with few traditions. During the first commemoration of 2019, however, those who had fought in the conflict and were still alive were honored. The first commemoration took held in Cuito Cuanavale on March 23, 2019. Since then, a museum has been built there and military weapons have been preserved.
