Special Education Day 2023: Date, History and 5 Interesting Facts

IDEA not only gave kids with learning disabilities rights, but it also set the stage for teachers and families to work together to make sure there are services and tools to help.

ulgeSpecial Education Day 2023: On December 2, 1975, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was signed into law. This day is marked as Special Education Day. IDEA made sure that kids with special needs could go to a free, good public school. The act has been changed many times, but the main idea behind it is still the same. It is the basis for special education in the U.S. Many groups have promised to help kids with special needs get a good education because they support this act. On Scholaroo, you can learn more about these grants and more.

How Special Education Day Came To Be

The first case was Mills vs. the Board of Education, which was filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia in 1972. It was found to be illegal to keep special kids, like those with learning problems, from going to school that was paid for by the government. This case made it possible to enact some laws, such as the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975. President Gerald Ford signed it into law on November 29, 1975. The Act was the first law in the country to deal with special education.

States that got government money had to make sure that kids with special needs had full access. The law was changed in 1986 to help parents and teachers more and move forward with education goals. The People with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA, became the name of this important law in 1990. Over the years, clauses have been added to deal with problems and make sure that the schooling standards for kids with special needs are the same as those for all kids.
IDEA not only gave kids with learning disabilities rights, but it also set the stage for teachers and families to work together to make sure there are services and tools to help. It began in 2005, which was the 30th anniversary of IDEA.
