The background of Titanic Remembrance Day

The Titanic was created by naval architect Thomas Andrews and shipbuilders Harland and Wolff of Belfast. Upon completion, it was believed to be the fastest ship in the globe. It measured 883 feet from stern to bow, and its hull was divided into 16 hermetic compartments. It was one of the largest and most opulent ocean liners ever constructed at the time.

It departed Southampton, England, on April 10 for its maiden voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. However, just before midnight on April 14, it failed to steer clear of an iceberg, causing at least five hull compartments to rupture and fill with water, resulting in the ship’s sinking after it split in two.

Due to a dearth of lifeboats and inadequate emergency procedures, more than 1,500 individuals perished in the sinking ship or in the icy waters of the North Atlantic. The majority of the roughly 700 survivors were females and infants. The disaster claimed the lives of a number of notable American and British citizens, including the renowned British journalist William Thomas Stead and the heirs to the Straus, Astor, and Guggenheim fortunes.

The survivors lost everything they had on board and were assisted by the public and charitable organisations from around the globe. Several Women’s relief committees assisted women in obtaining clothing, and several private railroads transported survivors to their immediate families at no cost.
