Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement is celebrated annually on January 26 by Ralph C. Morrison, a storyteller who created the day by using the name of an old school, Toad Hollow Country School, in his stories. Morrison believed every day is a good day to spread kindness and shared kindness, resources, and skills with his non-profit society, 'voluntoads'.

Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement 2024: January 26 is Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement, which we observe annually. Storyteller Ralph C. Morrison unintentionally established this day by using the term “Toad Hollow” in his tales after learning of the existence of the former Toad Hollow Country School, which one of his pupils had attended. He was enthralled by Toad Hollow and included it frequently in his stories. Morrison thought that there is a good reason to be kind and do good in the world every day. The Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement originated from an effort to spread goodwill, materials, and expertise.
Eunice was an old student of Ralph C. Morrison, a community college instructor in the area. Something about the name stuck with Morrison when he read an article about her later and learned that Eunice had attended Toad Hollow Country School, which was located on Knox Street in Kalamazoo and had closed in 1834. He finally used the phrase “Toad Hollow” in his made-up stories as a result of it. Toad Hollow became a magical village because of him. He replied that you can find the town within your heart in response to his readers’ questions concerning its location.
Morrison was granted permission by Kalamazoo County to narrate his stories in a nearby park as a result of the stories’ popularity. Scotts Mill County Park was purchased by the County in 1973, and it was made public in 1976. Morrison established a non-profit organization in 1992 to assist build the park. The volunteers that were chosen were referred to as “voluntoads,” and they constructed a replica of the town that they named Toad Hollow. They held events including Renaissance Fairs and Civil War reenactments, as well as lessons on blacksmithing, sewing, and the manufacture of candles and soap. Sadly, this was only effective for three years before the county took back ownership of the land.
Following this, the volunteers spread out and began working as teachers at neighboring schools until 2003. They took writing workshops, shared trade expertise, practiced storytelling, and had discussions about the arts. During this period, the volunteer toads also devised the Toad Hollow Day of Encouragement, a day dedicated to spreading compassion, knowledge, and support among themselves.
