The background of Trading Cards for Grown-ups Day

Authentic advertising papers were used to reinforce the packaging of cigarettes. During the 1860s, baseball cards were printed and commonly sold in candy or tobacco containers. In the 1870s and early 1900s, the advent of “color lithography” or multicolor printing contributed to the rise in popularity of trade cards. They were incorporated into product packaging as a prize and were generally unrelated to the product. However, they were vibrant and in full color, which drew people’s attention, and they began to collect and trade them to obtain a complete set.

Biographies began to be printed on baseball cards and packaged with bubble gum in the 1930s. In 1950, Topps Chewing Gum began including trading cards depicting television and movie stars, football athletes, and big game hunters in their packaging. In 1952, Topps also began manufacturing trading cards featuring player biographies, records, and other statistics.

In the 1980s, sports cards began to be regarded as collectibles, and the value of older cards began to increase. Trading card games were introduced in the 1990s. In 1993, Wizards of the Coast published the first Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Pokemon! Trading cards that were introduced in Japan in 1996 and the United States in 1998 are in high demand.
