Authentic advertising papers were used to reinforce the packaging of cigarettes. During the 1860s, baseball cards were printed and commonly sold in candy or tobacco containers. In the 1870s and early 1900s, the advent of “color lithography” or multicolor printing contributed to the rise in popularity of trade cards. They were incorporated into product packaging as a prize and were generally unrelated to the product. In the 1980s, sports cards began to be regarded as collectibles, and the value of older cards began to increase. Trading card games were introduced in the 1990s. In 1993, Wizards of the Coast published the first Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Pokemon!
