The United States Coast Guard, formerly known as the “Revenue Marine,” has existed for more than two centuries. The service is indispensable for our national security. The United States Coast Guard performs much more than search and rescue operations. When necessary, as Commander-in-Chief, the president can delegate Coast Guard operations to the Navy. Celebrating the birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard can aid in the recruitment of young people who want to make a difference in the world. In addition, the intensive training will thoroughly prepare young men and women for technological challenges and shifts in the struggle against maritime crime. Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, established the Revenue Marine, which subsequently evolved into the United States Coast Guard. The Revenue Cutter Service and U.S. Life Saving Service merged to establish the U.S. Coast Guard, a single maritime agency. Following the 9/11 terrorist assaults, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security assumed responsibility.
