Ukraine Independence Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Ukraine

Ukraine Independence Day occurs on August 24 and commemorates the nation’s 1991 declaration of independence from the U.S.S.R. This is the most popular day of the year and it is celebrated with great enthusiasm. Ukraine has always had its own culture and language, despite centuries of rule by Russia, Poland, Turkey, and other countries. Therefore, the holiday has special significance for Ukrainians, as it enables them to express their love for a nation governed by and for them. It is time to recognise and honour Ukraine’s historical champions and those who fought for their nation’s independence. The official celebration is held in Kyiv, where the President delivers a speech and state leaders lay flowers at the monuments of famous Ukrainians and take part in a prayer for Ukraine at St. Sophia’s Church.

The background of Ukraine Independence Day

In the 1990s, the Soviet Union disintegrated, and on July 16, 1990, the Ukrainian government declared statehood. A year later, on July 16, Ukraine’s Independence Day was celebrated. In August 1991, there was an unsuccessful attempt to restore communist authority in the Soviet Union. As a consequence of the attempted coup, fears of a return to the Soviet government intensified, and deputies brought the Ukrainian flag into the Verkhovna Rada session hall. On August 24, the Ukrainian parliament ratified the Act of Independence of Ukraine, and the Verkhovna Rada building was adorned with a yellow and blue flag.

The Ukrainian flag has a rich historical heritage. In the 20th century, between 1917 and 1920, it was the flag of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, but it was prohibited by the Soviet regime and became a symbol of the independence movement. The declaration stipulated that a national referendum must be held on December 1, 1991, and there was concern that Ukraine could be divided into east and west. Over 80% of voters supported independence, with 92% voting in favour. The 16th of July was superseded by the 24th of August as Ukraine’s Independence Day following a legislative amendment approved in June 1992.
