National VFW Day is celebrated annually on September 29. On this day, we honor the valor and sacrifice of the men and women who have selflessly served the United States of America as veterans. ‘V.F.W.’ stands for ‘Veterans of Foreign conflicts,’ an organization founded to support past and present American service members who have participated in foreign conflicts, expeditions, or campaigns.
The background of VFW DAY
The United States Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) organization was founded in 1913. During a historically significant convention in Pittsburgh. After the Spanish-American War, in 1899, three war-veteran associations were founded and merged to establish the organization. The American Veterans of Foreign Service, which had two chapters, was headquartered in Ohio and Pennsylvania, while The Colorado Society of the Army of the Philippines was headquartered in Colorado and Pennsylvania.
Despite the fact that the merger occurred in 1913, the VFW recognizes 1899 as its foundation year. According to its website, the organization’s mission is to “foster camaraderie among U.S. veterans of distant conflicts. To serve our military, veterans, and communities. To advocate for the interests of all veterans.”
The history of V.F.W. Day can be traced to the organization’s founding. The day was established to honor the historic founding of the V.F.W. on September 29, 1899, when a group of Spanish-American war veterans banded together to share their experiences and provide mutual support. The V.F.W. is still thriving 120 years later, with over 1.5 million members and 6,000 Posts in all 50 U.S. states, the Asia-Pacific region, and Europe.
Candidates must be U.S. citizens or nationals, former or current members of the armed forces, and must have served in a conflict, campaign, or expedition on foreign soil, hostile airspace, or hostile waters in order to join the organization.
