World Anthropology Day 2023: Date, History, Essential facts

World Anthropology Day is observed on the third Thursday of February; this year, it falls on February 16. The day is designated to honour the discipline and educate the public about anthropology. The scientific study of humankind is anthropology. It covers human behaviour, biology, and the functioning of human societies. It considers past and present data and looks to the future for exploration. Anthropology helps to explain the origins of humans and what distinguishes our species from others. It enables us to comprehend how our world functions, why we behave as we do, and how we affect our environments. HISTORY OF WORLD ANTHROPOLOGY DAY

In 2015, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) initiated World Anthropology Day. It was originally known as National Anthropology Day, but in 2016 it was renamed. It seemed more appropriate to celebrate World Anthropology Day because anthropology is essential to the entire world, not just one nation.

Anthropology is the study of the origin and evolution of human cultures and societies. It examines past and present community characteristics using various scientific methods. The study of cultures reveals a people’s learned behaviours, beliefs, institutions, languages, and social structures. This field investigates the historical lifestyles of people from around the globe. The study must present human subjects in a transparent and objective manner.

Typically, this is accomplished by observing subjects in their native environments. Consequently, anthropologists use ethnography to describe local customs and interactions. Anthropologists can observe and explain the true purpose of cultures, institutions, and practises by participating in the daily lives of their subjects. This is known in anthropology as participant observation.

Anthropologists must evaluate their interpretations of the cultures and societies they study to ensure objectivity. This prevents ethnocentrism. Ethnocentrism is the prejudiced belief that all groups are inferior to others, typically one’s own social or cultural group. An anthropologist’s objective is to describe a society and its culture in the language of its members.
