World Freedom Day 2023: History
As a commemorative event following World War II, the collapse of the Berlin Wall gave rise to World Freedom Day. But today, the significance of the Wall’s collapse is greater than the wall itself. It signified the demise of communism in Central and Eastern Europe and established universal freedom. The holiday was officially recognized as a federal observance by President George W. Bush in 2001.
The conclusion of World War II resulted in the division of Germany into East and West Germany. The Americans, the French, and the British occupied West Germany, while the Soviet Union established the German Democratic Republic in East Germany. In 1949, East Germany achieved independence, while Berlin was incorporated into the Soviet-controlled German Empire.
To prohibit the emigration of East Berliners to West Berlin and the remainder of Western Europe, a barrier known as a wall was erected. There were an estimated 5,000 escapees through the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989. Over a hundred individuals were slain as a result of the operation. East Germany eased travel restrictions in 1989, prompting thousands of individuals to ascend the wall impatiently while striking it with chisels and hammers. The Berlin Wall was gradually demolished until it was finally brought down on November 9, 1989. The following year, Germany once more reverted to a singular territory.
