The phrase “park ranger” may not be the first item that comes to mind when hearing that July 31 is World Ranger Day. You may envision army rangers, Texas rangers, or New York rangers more frequently. World Ranger Day, however, is not about military or athletic icons. Today, we honour the unsung heroes who protect, preserve, and defend America’s diminishing wilderness land resources: park rangers and forest rangers. In addition, we honour rangers who have died in the course of duty. Most of us can envision a park ranger verifying passes and gathering entrance fees at a national park’s entrance booth or a forest ranger interpreting wildlife and discussing conservation while leading excursions. However, few of us are aware of how frequently a park ranger’s duties expose him or her to life-threatening hazards inherent to the profession.
The background of World Ranger Day
In 2004, Sean Willmore, a documentary filmmaker and conservationist concerned about the lack of respect and awareness of the perils park rangers face worldwide, made it his mission to bring real-life stories of the plight of park rangers into the public eye through the lens of a camera. Willmore, a park ranger himself, spent nearly a year interviewing rangers in 23 countries to uncover and record inspiring accounts of service and sacrifice for the documentary “The Thin Green Line.”
Since its premiere in 2007, “The Thin Green Line” has been viewed in more than 50 countries, restoring park officers’ dignity, pride, and hope. The documentary offers a rare view into the daily lives of park rangers, highlighting the sacrifices they and their families make in the face of everyday dangers. The film inspired Ranger Willmore to establish The Thin Green Line Foundation, the official charity branch of the 1992-founded International Rangers Federation or IRF. Together, the two organisations provide assistance and support to the families of rangers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty, similar to the organisations that assist the families of deceased police officers and firefighters.
The Thin Green Line Foundation and The International Rangers Federation collaborated in 2007 to commemorate the first World Ranger Day in honour of the International Rangers Foundation’s 15th anniversary. World Ranger Day recognises the men and women who have devoted their lives to safeguarding and preserving our parks, forests, and preserves, as well as the fallen rangers who were killed in the line of duty. In 2011, Dr. Jane Goodall, a renowned primatologist, anthropologist, and conservationist, was appointed ambassador for The Thin Green Line Foundation. Dr. Goodall ardently promotes World Ranger Day to highlight the vital role park rangers play in protecting and preserving the natural resources and wildlife of our planet.
Sometimes, park caretakers are law enforcement officers, environmentalists, and cultural historians. Regardless of their primary function, all park rangers serve as the first line of defence in safeguarding the wildlife, natural resources, and ecosystems of national, state, and local parks, as well as ensuring the safety of park visitors. Rangers live, work, and sometimes risk their lives to safeguard wildlife habitats from poachers and other human threats, such as careless behavior-caused wildfires. On any given day, a ranger may be required to seize firearms, apprehend poachers and traffickers, extinguish wildfires, prevent illegal grazing of livestock on federal lands, and prevent thefts of timber and culturally significant objects. Rangers are always the first responders to hazardous and daring rescues on land, sea, and in the air when park visitors are lost, injured, or trapped. In fact, non-profit organisations report that over 1,000 park rangers have been killed in the course of duty over the past decade.
“Rangers are the conservation’s missing link. I will therefore do everything possible to support The Thin Green Line Foundation.” — Jane Goodall, Ph.D.
