Geographical Indication (GI) Tags 2023: State-wise List of Unique Cultural Treasures
Many questions in different competitive exams often relate to the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag 2024 under general awareness. It is a good idea to be aware of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Geographical Indication (GI) Tags
A GI tag is an abbreviation of Geographical Indication. It is essentially a name or sign given to certain products that are based on geographical regions, towns, or countries. Additionally, we can state that a geographical indication certifies a product as having a specific quality or reputation based on its geographical location.
A general rule is that GI tags are issued to agricultural products, wine and spirits, foods, and handicrafts.
A GI tag ensures that only authorized and registered manufacturers may use the famous product name. The authorities issue the Darjeeling Tea GI tag. It is forbidden to use the geographical indication “Darjeeling” unless a tea garden grows it or produces it according to the specified method.
Among the five states in India with the most GI tags are Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala.
Kerala has 35 GI tags, Uttar Pradesh has 34 GI tags, and Maharashtra has 31 GI tags, with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka having the most tags.
GI Tag objectives
It restricts unauthorized use of a registered geographical indication and provides many other advantages.
As a result, the manufacturer of unique goods originating from a particular place in the country has legal security.
As a result of the GI tag, customers can receive the finest-quality products of their choice.
If the manufacturer has a GI tag, it indicates that the manufacturer is producing a genuine product.
Additionally, it enhances and promotes the goodwill of manufacturers of GI-tagged goods by boosting demand on national and international markets.
