World Malaria Day 2022 theme, causes, symptoms, and prevention

This year, the theme of World Malaria Day 2022 is “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.”

World Malaria Day is observed every year on 25 April across the world. This special day is celebrated to spread awareness among people about malarial fever. Let us tell you, there are many such countries around the world that are fighting this deadly disease, which is caused by mosquito bites, known as Malaria. Very few people would know that there are not only one but five types of malarial fever.

Causes of Malaria?

Malaria fever is a type of infectious disease caused by mosquitoes. It is caused by a virus called ‘Plasmodium vivax’. This virus enters the human body through the bite of the female mosquito ‘Anopheles’ and multiplies it. After which these bacteria make the person sick by infecting the liver and blood cells.

Symptoms of Malaria

Symptoms of malaria usually develop for 10 days to 4 weeks after getting infected by the mosquitoes. Sometimes it takes more than this time. When the female mosquito bites, the parasites remain dormant in the body for a long time.

The symptoms are:

Headache

High fever

Sweating profusely

Muscle pain

Giggle

Vomiting

Coughing

Extreme cold

Severe pain in chest and abdomen

Body cramps

Blood in stool

Types of Malaria

There is a total of 5 types of Malaria that can infect anyone. These are:

  • Plasmodium vivax (or P. vivax)
    Plasmodium malariae (or P. malariae)
  • Plasmodium falciparum (or P. falciparum)
    Plasmodium knowlesi (or P. knowlesi)
    Plasmodium ovale (or P. ovale)

How to prevent Malaria?

Apply DEET (diethyltoluamide) with insect repellent on exposed parts of the skin.
Mosquito netting should be draped over the mattresses.
Place screens on all of your windows and doors.

Permethrin is an insect repellent that may be used on clothes, mosquito nets, tents, sleeping bags, and other materials.
