Car-free Sunday 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

World Car-Free Day is observed annually on September 22. The day encourages drivers to forgo their vehicles for a day. Some cities and nations host celebrations in honor of this day. The events, which differ by location, provide drivers and commuters with a glimpse of what their community would be like with fewer automobiles. Beginning in 1973 with the oil crisis, projects of this nature occurred on an irregular basis; it was not until October 1994 that a structured call for such projects was made in a keynote address by Eric Britton at the International Ciudades Accessibles Conference held in Toledo, Spain.

The background of Car-free Sunday

The first annual Car-Free Day was established by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) on the first Tuesday of their Green Transport Week, which occurred on June 17 or thereabouts. Originally conceived as a pan-European day, the 22nd of September was designated as an independent day in 2000, to be sponsored by the European Commission. Later, it was expanded globally, and a large number of cities around the globe were invited to ban cars from their downtown areas. Instead, pedestrians, cyclists, and other sustainable modes of transportation were encouraged.

The purpose of this holiday is for people to consider what their city would look like with fewer vehicles and what steps would be necessary to make that vision a reality. Advocates report that over 100 million people in 1,500 cities around the globe celebrate International Car-Free Day, though it is done on days they choose and in ways they choose as well. However, this claim remains unverified. Between 1994 and 2005, hundreds of cities experimented with a variety of methods to celebrate this day under a variety of circumstances and on numerous occasions.

Activists, while attempting to determine the advantages of this holiday, suggested that it would be agreeable to have a pleasant day with fewer cars and, presumably, fewer accidents in at least some sections of the city or cities, but they also believed that this could not be the end result. As far as the activists were concerned, the purpose of a Car-Free day was to serve as a catalyst for a much larger and more ambitious process of citywide systemic transformation towards a sustainable transportation system.
