Mette-Marit Tjessem Hiby was born in Kristiansand, southern Norway, on August 19, 1973, to Sven O. Hiby, a local newspaper correspondent, and Marit Tjessem, a former bank employee. Her parents divorced, and her father subsequently married Renate Barsgard, a professional prostitute. She has a sibling and two older brothers, including the executive director of the public relations firm First House, Per Hiby. Trond Berntsen, her half-brother from her mother’s 1994 marriage to Rolf Berntsen, perished in the 2011 terrorist assaults in Norway. Mette-Marit spent many weekends and vacations in the adjacent Setesdal Valley and on the coast, where she learned to swim. In her adolescence, she was involved with the local youth club Slettheia, where she served as the activities director. She played volleyball as an adolescent and later served as a judge and coach.

Due to the fact that she was a part-time student, it took her an unusually long six years to conclude high school before enrolling in college preparatory courses at Agder College. Then she served as a server at Oslo’s Café Engebret. Mette-Marit met her future spouse, Crown Prince Haakon, at the Quart Festival, Norway’s largest music festival, which was held in her hometown of Kristiansand at the end of the 1990s.

When Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit announced their engagement, the public and the media expressed disapproval. Later, however, they were persuaded of her intelligence, dignity, and sagacity and changed their minds. Haakon gave Matte-Marit the same engagement ring that his ancestor, King Olav V, and his father, King Harald V, had given to their respective betrothed. The couple married in Oslo Cathedral on August 25, 2001. She was given the title of Her Royal Highness Crown Princess of Norway upon her marriage.
