Celebrating the gods’ victory over the wicked, the festival is significant because it symbolizes the triumph of virtue over evil. This is exemplified by the legendary triumph of ‘Durga’ over the malevolent ‘Mahisasur,’ who instilled fear throughout the planet.

Six days are considered significant: day one, day seven, day eight, day nine, day ten, and day fifteen. Denoted as ‘Nawa Ratri,’ the initial nine days of the festival commemorate the nine-day conflict that transpired between the demon and Durga. The demon was vanquished on day ten, and the concluding five days represent triumphant celebrations paid homage to Durga, the divine mother deity.
