Holy Cross Day 2023: Holy Cross Day, observed on September 14, honours and commemorates the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross for our salvation. This celebration is also known as “The Triumph of the Cross” in the Roman Catholic Church and “Exaltation of the Holy Cross” in the eastern church. On occasion, this day is referred to as Holy Rood Day.

Holy Cross Day Origin

Holy Cross Day is associated with the dedication of a group of structures constructed by Emperor Constantine on the sites of Christ’s crucifixion and tomb in Jerusalem. This ceremony took place on September 14, 335. Helena, Constantine’s mother, uncovered a relic that was believed to be the cross during the excavation.

From the fourth century onward, the Church of Jerusalem claimed possession of this relic and held a celebration to mark its discovery. This feast also commemorates Heraclius, the Byzantine Emperor, who spoke at Jerusalem on the subject of the cross.

Supposedly, he retrieved the cross from the Persians, who had taken it from Jerusalem in the seventh century when they plundered the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The veracity of these assertions remains unverified.

Holy Cross Day 2023: Holy Cross Day is observed through remembrance and veneration of Jesus Christ and the sacrifice he made for the salvation of humanity. It is commonly observed with a religious service, prayer, and reflection, but it can be observed in other ways as well.

It is possible to create baked products in the shape of a cross, such as Hot Cross Buns and cross-shaped cakes.
