According to tradition, fragrant basil grew on the hill where the Holy Cross was discovered, so some individuals use basil to create a special dish for Holy Cross Day. This can include soups, breads, and pesto dishes with basil.

Holy Cross Day 2023: Holy Cross Day, observed on September 14, honours and commemorates the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made on the cross for our salvation. This celebration is also known as “The Triumph of the Cross” in the Roman Catholic Church and “Exaltation of the Holy Cross” in the eastern church. On occasion, this day is referred to as Holy Rood Day.

Holy Cross Day Origin

Holy Cross Day is associated with the dedication of a group of structures constructed by Emperor Constantine on the sites of Christ’s crucifixion and tomb in Jerusalem. This ceremony took place on September 14, 335. Helena, Constantine’s mother, uncovered a relic that was believed to be the cross during the excavation.

From the fourth century onward, the Church of Jerusalem claimed possession of this relic and held a celebration to mark its discovery. This feast also commemorates Heraclius, the Byzantine Emperor, who spoke at Jerusalem on the subject of the cross.

Supposedly, he retrieved the cross from the Persians, who had taken it from Jerusalem in the seventh century when they plundered the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The veracity of these assertions remains unverified.
