Isra and Mi’raj 2023: In Islam, Isra and Mi’raj, which is observed on the 27th day of the seventh month of the Muslim calendar, alludes to a miraculous overnight journey made in two legs by the Prophet Muhammad. From Mecca to Jerusalem, then Jerusalem to paradise. Muslims view it as both a physical and spiritual journey aided by Allah himself, such as when he provided Muhammad with the Buraq, a stallion resembling a pegasus, to ride during the first leg of the journey.
The history of Israel and Jordan
There is some disagreement among scholars as to whether “the farthest mosque,” the Al-Aqsa, was a literal brick mosque or a simple place of prayer, but Muslims agree that Muhammed’s journey was truly a miracle, as it would have taken more than a month to travel from Mecca to Jerusalem by normal means, as opposed to the single night of Isra and Mi’raj.
The incidents of Isra and Mi’raj occurred at a period when Muhammad was confronted with extreme adversity. ‘Am al-Huzun, or the Year of Sorrow, was the name given to the year in which he lost two of his closest loved ones. His uncle Abu Talib, an invaluable mentor, had passed away, as had his wife Khadijah, who had been his life’s consolation.
Although there are several stories of what transpired during the Mi’raj, the majority of Islamic traditions contain similar themes. Through Jibreel or Gabriel, Allah ascended the Prophet Muhammad from the Dome of the Rock through the heavens or heaven. In addition to encountering several angels and spectacular sights, Muhammad encountered a different prophet on each of the seven levels of heaven. Adam came first, followed by John the Baptist and Jesus, Joseph, Idris, Aaron, Moses, and Abraham.
After meeting Abraham, Muhammad proceeds to meet Allah without the Angel Gabriel. Here is where Allah bestowed upon the ummah (Muslims) the obligatory salah or prayer. Allah instructs Muhammad that his people must pray 50 times every day, but as Muhammad descends to Earth, he meets Moses, who tells him to return to Allah and ask for less prayers because 50 is excessive. Muhammad intercedes nine times between Moses and Allah until the number of daily prayers is reduced to five, which Allah would reward tenfold.
The Prophet Muhammad was ultimately returned to Makkah after being returned to Al-Asqa. When he was being brought back home, he observed other caravans travelling towards Makkah, which he would later recount to the Quraysh as evidence that he had actually performed his miraculous journey. The entire voyage had been completed in less than a single night, and many would ridicule Muhammad for making such a claim. Yet, the story was a source of wonder and hope for Muslims, as it remains for many Muslims today.
